Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about car hire in Aphrodite Hills — deposits, insurance, driving, pickup and licences.
How far is Aphrodite Hills from Paphos airport?
About 20 km, a 20-25 minute drive. You take the B6 from the airport, join the A6 motorway eastbound, and exit at the signed Aphrodite Hills / Petra tou Romiou junction. The drive is toll-free throughout.
How long is the transfer from Larnaca?
Roughly 112 km and about 75 minutes, almost all on motorway via the A5, A1 and A6. It is an easy drive but a tiring one after a long flight, which is why most resort guests prefer Paphos.
Should I pre-book or hire at the airport desk?
Pre-booking is almost always better. You secure a rate before the winter golf peak, skip the desk queue, and avoid the limited choice that walk-up customers face when estates and automatics sell out.
Where do I fill up before returning the car?
The EKO station at Mandria on the B6 is the natural last fill before Paphos Airport. After hours it runs as automated self-service, so carry a card enabled for overseas automated pumps.
Do I need an International Driving Permit for Cyprus?
No. A standard UK photocard licence is fully valid in the Republic of Cyprus, so you do not need an IDP to hire or drive a car.
How do speed cameras work for hire cars?
A camera fine is sent to the hire company, which identifies you as the driver and charges the fine plus an admin fee, usually €10-€50, to your card. You then pay the principal fine online, typically within 30 days.
What is the drink-drive limit in Cyprus?
0.05% blood alcohol, or 22 micrograms per 100 ml of breath. For drivers licensed under three years and professional drivers it drops to 0.02%, which is effectively zero. A single drink can exceed it.
Are there toll roads in Cyprus?
No. There are no toll roads anywhere on the island, including the A6 motorway that links Paphos, Aphrodite Hills and Limassol.
Do I need a hire car at Aphrodite Hills?
For more than a long weekend, yes. The resort is self-contained but isolated on its plateau, with no bus to the gates and premium on-site prices. Taxis to Paphos run €30-€40 each way, so a weekly hire car quickly works out cheaper and far more flexible for sightseeing, beaches and dinners in the villages.
Which airport is best for Aphrodite Hills?
Paphos (PFO) is about 20 km and a 20-25 minute drive west, making it the easy choice. Larnaca (LCA) is around 112 km and 75 minutes east — only worth it if your flights or fares strongly favour Larnaca, or you plan to tour the east of the island.
Can I hire a car on the resort itself?
Yes. Leos Car Rentals has an office in the Aphrodite Hills village square, and most Paphos firms will deliver a car to the resort, often for a small surcharge. That lets you hire for only part of your stay rather than the full holiday.
Do I need an IDP with a UK licence?
No. Cyprus drives on the left and accepts a standard UK photocard licence in full, so there is no need to buy or carry an International Driving Permit to hire a car.
Is my hire car insured on dirt roads?
No. Cyprus contracts void all cover — including zero-excess policies — once you leave sealed tarmac. Damage, a punctured tyre or recovery on the Akamas tracks or the Adonis Baths road is entirely at your own expense, so keep the car on asphalt.
How far is Petra tou Romiou from Aphrodite Hills?
About 4.5 km, roughly a five-minute drive west on the B6. Park in the free inland car park and use the pedestrian tunnel under the road to reach the beach safely.
Can you swim at Aphrodite's Rock?
You can wade from the pebble beach, but it is not a safe swimming spot: the bay is exposed with strong currents, a steep shelf and no lifeguard. The famous swim around the rock is best left as a legend.
When is the Sanctuary of Aphrodite at Kouklia open?
Tuesday to Sunday, 08:30 to 17:00, and closed on Mondays since July 2024. Entry is €4.50, with free admission for over-65s and students carrying valid ID. Hours can change seasonally, so check before visiting.
Is parking free at the Aphrodite heritage sites?
Yes at all of them. Petra tou Romiou, Palaipaphos and Kouklia village all have free parking, and the Paphos Archaeological Park uses a large free municipal lot by the harbour.
Can I play several golf courses from Aphrodite Hills?
Yes — Secret Valley is five minutes away, Elea 15-20 minutes and Minthis 25-30 minutes. A hire car with an estate or SUV boot makes a multi-course trip easy; a small hatchback cannot carry several golf bags with passengers.
What is the best beach near the resort?
Pissouri Bay, about 15 minutes east, is the easiest and calmest, with a free car park behind the sand. Coral Bay to the north is a longer but rewarding half-day for golden sand and the Sea Caves.
Can I visit a winery and still drive?
Only with a designated driver who does not drink. The Cyprus limit is 0.05% blood alcohol, and just 0.02% for newer drivers, so the safe approach is for one person to abstain entirely on any winery day.
Is the drive into the Troodos mountains difficult?
The roads are well surfaced but very twisty, so passengers prone to car sickness should sit in front, and drivers should use engine braking on the descents. Allow for winter snow at the highest peaks in January and February.
